Job Title: Operations Manager – 3 or 4 days a week

Location: Home-based, with frequent travels to London

Salary: £30K-£32K pro-rata

Bread and Water for Africa UK is an overseas development charity supporting grassroots organisations in Africa. Founded in 2004, BWAUK works directly with small local organisations to identify the solutions that exist and work best, using local staff and local resources. Our trusted partners run food and water programmes, schools, orphanages and life-saving clinics. We focus on long-term projects rather than temporary relief efforts, so we can give African communities a hand up, not a handout. In this way, these sustainable projects can continue to help future generations.

We are looking for someone who can manage all aspects of the charity’s operations including admin, governance, programme and grants management, fundraising and communications.

Because we are a small team, you will be instrumental in making sure we continue to support our partners in Africa, directly impacting the lives of hundreds of children and families. Working closely with the CEO and Board of Trustees, you will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the charity, providing input for its strategic direction, successful management and overall success.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Finance, including preparation of annual budgets and financial statements
  • General Administration
  • Fundraising
  • Donors relations
  • Communications, including website and social media, reporting
  • Grants management and programme evaluation
  • Governance, including preparing Trustees meetings and ensuring compliance and developing internal policies and processes.

Being part of a small team, you will be required to be flexible and adaptive, taking on other tasks as necessary. In return, the role is very varied, challenging and rewarding, with the opportunity for growth.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years of experience, is a self-starter who is capable of working with minimum supervision, a problem-solver who is eager to grow and expand their knowledge and has a real passion for our cause. Experience in the charity sector and/or in direct marketing will be an asset.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and a high comfort level when speaking to diverse individuals or groups and representing the charity at events;
  • Excellent analytical, and organizational skills; capacity to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
  • Experience in financial management and budgeting;
  • A self-starter capable of working with minimum supervision, showing initiative and creativity to solve problems and ability to manage your own workload confidently and efficiently;
  • Flexibility in adapting to diverse tasks as they arise and a can-do attitude towards a wide range of activities;
  • Willingness to travel within the UK occasionally and on weekends/evenings for networking or community engagement events and willingness to travel to Africa if the need arises;
  • Strong IT skills and ability to quickly learn new systems;
  • A strong interest for the cause of supporting African-led initiatives and work in a collegial manner with our partners.

 Highly desirable:

  • People management skills – able to work constructively and positively with individuals from a range of backgrounds.
  • Experience managing projects, including multiple tasks and competing deadlines.
  • Ability to represent the Charity and its values and maintain and grow its network of partners and peers.
  • Prior charity experience.
